A CALL TO OPEN INTER-STATE BORDER CLOSURE
The impacts of Covid-19 in the world can never be over emphasized particularly in Nigeria where a greater percentage of her citizens feed from hand-to-mouth. Moreover, innocent lives have been lost as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Federal and State governments are highly commended for the effective measures taken in combating the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the country.
However, the lockdown is no longer helping issues rather it is aggravating the plight of people to the point that many people are dying not just because of Covid-19 but hunger which has been the order of the day. Therefore, Federal and State governments should reconsider inter-state border closure. They are advised to open all borders to ease movement across states.
Nevertheless, its opening should be under strong and strict checks. For instance, every occupant in every vehicle crossing a border should be checked thoroughly – temperature level, and other necessary tests needed to be done. If movement within a state is not prohibited then why will movement across states be prohibited? Therefore, it is necessary for the borders to be opened to help ease severe hardship ravaging the masses.
Furthermore, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU are fighting a good course hence their demands should be considered.
The Federal Government are also advised to use the funds donated by individuals and cooperate bodies for distribution of palliatives, to reach out to the masses through cash or food items. These funds were meant for the interest of the masses and not for personal interests. Hence, should not take delight in the suffering of their subjects. Also, they should ensure the necessary amenities are provided and accessible to the masses.
